Helping Senior Pets: Tips for Making Their Golden Years Golden

Dignity Services

26/04/2024

As our cherished furry companions enter their golden years, their energy and leaps may transition to a gentler pace. However, the deep bond and unconditional love they bring to our lives remain as important as ever. At Dignity, we understand the special bond between pet and owner. We want to support you in helping your senior pets have golden years that truly sparkle.

Prioritising Health and Wellness:

  • Regular Veterinary Care:  It is recommended that senior pets should recieve regular check ups at their vets, encouraging twice-yearly visits. These enable early detection of potential health concerns, allowing for timely intervention and improved quality of life. The Royal Veterinary College emphasises the importance of these regular examinations, highlighting how they can help prevent or manage chronic health conditions often seen in older pets.
  • Dietary Adjustments: A diet created for your senior pet by a veterinarian can significantly support your pet’s health, as suggested by the PDSA. These diets typically address age-related changes in metabolism, dental health, and overall nutritional needs. Such improvements include food that is easily digestable with the perfect balance of nutrients.

Enhancing Comfort and Security:

  • Cozy Accommodations: Invest in a comfortable, supportive bed that allows for easy access. Consider an orthopaedic bed for additional joint support, readily available from pet retailers like Pets at Home or The Range.
  • Adapting the Environment: Transform your home into a safe haven for your senior pet. Remove potential tripping hazards like loose rugs or electrical cords. Add ramps or non-slip steps to furniture to assist with climbing, and consider using non-slip mats on walkways to prevent falls.

Gentle Exercise for Continued Vitality:

  • Tailored Activity: While your pet’s energy levels may decrease, gentle exercise remains vital for maintaining muscle mass, joint mobility, and cognitive function. Short, frequent walks on familiar routes, supervised low-impact swimming sessions (if your pet enjoys them), or engaging indoor playtime with interactive toys are excellent options. The Blue Cross for Pets advocates for the importance of continued exercise for senior pets, even if it needs to be adjusted to their capabilities.
  • Listen to Your Pet: Always prioritise your pet’s comfort and well-being above all else. Adjust the duration and intensity of exercise based on their individual needs and preferences. Pay close attention to any signs of fatigue or discomfort, allowing them to rest as needed.

Keeping Their Minds Sharp:

  • Mental Stimulation: Don’t underestimate the power of mental exercise! Engage your pet with interactive toys like food puzzles or snuffle mats, short training sessions with familiar commands, or even hiding treats around the house for them to find using their sense of smell. This not only keeps their minds active but can also be a great way to bond and have fun together.

Where Dignity Can Help:

  • End-of-Life Considerations: As pet owners, navigating end-of-life decisions can be an emotionally challenging, yet incredibly important, time. Dignity is committed to providing compassionate and respectful pet aftercare services, ensuring your cherished companion receives a dignified farewell when the time comes. We understand the unique bond you share with your pet, and we strive to offer support and guidance throughout this difficult process.
  • Pre-planning for Peace of Mind: We understand that planning for your pet’s end-of-life can be an overhwelming experience. Our pre-payment plan allows you to make arrangements and pay for your pet’s cremation and memorial service in advance. This alleviates the financial burden and emotional stress during a difficult time, allowing you to focus on cherishing your final moments with your beloved companion.
  • Additional Resources: Dignity’s website offers a wealth of resources on pet bereavement support and the aftercare services we provide.

By prioritising your senior pet’s well-being through these simple adjustments, you can create a fulfilling and enriching environment where they continue to thrive. Remember, the love and joy they bring to our lives are immeasurable. Let’s work together to ensure their golden years truly shine brightly.
